Biography

Melvin Leok received his Ph.D. in Control Dynamical Systems from the California Institute of Technology in 2004. Before joining the University of California, San Diego in 2009, he served as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Purdue University and a Visiting Assistant Professor in Control Dynamical Systems at the California Institute of Technology. He also held the position of T.H. Hildebrandt Research Assistant Professor in Mathematics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Leok's research focuses on Computational Geometric Mechanics, an area of computational applied mathematics that plays an increasingly important role in modern science and engineering. His work employs synthesis of differential geometric and numerical analysis techniques to provide long-term solutions to differential equations that are stable and robust, thereby offering methods for modeling and controlling contemporary engineering systems.
