Biography

Professor Rogers has wide-ranging interests in contemporary democratic theory and the history of American and African-American political thought. He is the author of "Undiscovered Dewey: Religion, Morality, Ethos Democracy" (Columbia University Press, 2008) and "Darkened Light of Faith: Race, Democracy, Freedom in African American Political Thought" (Princeton University Press, 2023). He also edited several significant works, including "John Dewey, Public Problems" (Ohio University Press, 2016) and "African American Political Thought: Collected History" (University of Chicago Press, 2021). These works encapsulate 30 essays by significant figures in the tradition of African American political thought, co-edited with Jack Turner. His scholarly articles have been published in major academic journals, as well as in popular venues like Dissent, Atlantic, Public Seminar, and Boston Review. Serving as a co-editor for Oxford University Press' New Histories in Philosophy series, Professor Rogers is especially interested in compiling resources within Africana Philosophy. His research interrogates the value of John Dewey’s political philosophy for democratic life and considers how character, sustained through the African American philosophical tradition, influences democratic engagement. Professor Rogers teaches courses focused on the history of political thought, particularly American and African American political thought, and contemporary political theory.
