Biography

Professor Menno van Zelm heads the Allergy Clinical Immunology Laboratory in the Department of Immunology and Pathology at the Alfred Research Alliance (ARA) precinct. He completed his PhD studies at Erasmus MC Rotterdam in the Netherlands, focusing on B cell development and primary antibody deficiencies. His research has provided new insights into human B cell differentiation and proliferation, as well as the genetic defects associated with antibody deficiencies. Prof. van Zelm has conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California San Diego, where he explored the structural organization of the Ig heavy chain locus. Since moving to Monash University in 2015, he has focused on B cell development and memory formation, with applications to patient care in immune-related diseases including COVID-19 and IgE-mediated allergies. He has received multiple grants and prestigious awards for his research, such as the Veni Fellowship and the Heineken Young Scientists Award.
