Biography

Mercedes Balcells-Camps is a Faculty Director of the MIT-Spain Program and a Principal Research Scientist at the Institute of Medical Engineering and Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She earned her Master of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering from Institut Químic de Sarrià and in Chemistry from Ramon Llull University in 1995 and 1996, respectively, and completed her PhD in Macromolecular Chemistry at RWTH Aachen in 1999. A former fellow of La Caixa Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD), Dr. Balcells joined the Harvard-MIT Biomedical Engineering Center as a postdoctoral fellow, focusing on pioneering work in tissue engineering for the creation of vessel-like structures. In 2006, she became a research scientist at MIT while holding a dual position at her alma mater, Institut Químic de Sarrià. She is passionate about fostering innovative research and educational exchanges between institutions and countries, notably through the establishment of the MIT-Spain Program that offers internships to students in Spain. Dr. Balcells has also contributed to the advancement of science and technology as co-founder of the Spanish startup Regenear, which focuses on cartilage regeneration, and she chairs the MIT IDEA2 Global program, mentoring biomedical innovators across the world.
