Biography

Mercedes Vaquero, born in Toledo, Spain, obtained her Licenciatura from Universidad Complutense in 1976, an M.A. from Michigan in 1979, and M.A. and PhD degrees from Princeton in 1981 and 1984 respectively. She joined the Department of Hispanic Studies at Brown University in 1989 and became part of the Medieval Studies Program in 1991. She has taught at Boston University, University of Michigan, Princeton University, Middlebury College, and Saint Lawrence University. Vaquero has directed the International Institute of Spain and has held notable positions in professional organizations such as the Modern Language Association. Her research interests include Medieval Spanish epic, chronicles, ballads, and oral traditions, and she has contributed significantly through various articles and books, most notably those concerning the prosification of medieval texts and the role of women in epic literature. She is currently working on projects related to private libraries from the late Spanish Middle Ages.
