Biography

Meredith (Merry) C. Schuman studied at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, receiving a B.Sc. in Molecular Biology and Philosophy. She was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to conduct research at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology (MPICE) in Jena, Germany, where she continued to earn her doctorate from Friedrich Schiller University, Jena in 2012, as part of the International Max Planck Research School. She was appointed as a group leader in the ecology platform and as the leader of the Department of Molecular Ecology at MPICE, initiating her own research program. From 2014 to 2017, she was affiliated as a Junior Group Leader at the German Center for Integrated Biodiversity Research (iDiv). In 2018, she moved to the University of Zurich (UZH) as a guest professor and later as an assistant professor. She has received multiple awards and scholarships, including the Otto Hahn Medal from the Max Planck Society, in recognition of her outstanding scientific achievements. Professor Schuman's research program is rooted in molecular ecology, focusing on investigating spatial and temporal variation in genetic functional diversity and the ecological consequences at a landscape scale. Overall, her work aims to explore why living things differ and the significance of these differences in ecology.
