Dr. Merja Kytö

Biography

Merja Kytö is a Senior Professor of English Language at Uppsala University, specializing in historical linguistics with a particular focus on Early and Late Modern English. Her research encompasses language variation and change, corpus linguistics, and historical sociolinguistics, with significant contributions to the understanding of the English language used in Britain and early North-American colonies. Kytö received her PhD in English Linguistics from the University of Helsinki in 1991, where she worked on the Helsinki Corpus project. She has held academic posts at the University of Tampere as Associate Professor of English Philology, specializing in American Language and Literature, before her appointment at Uppsala University. Kytö has authored and co-edited numerous works, including 'Nineteenth-Century English: Stability and Change' and 'Early Modern English Dialogues.' Her recent projects involve the compilation of historical corpora and the editing of works related to English historical linguistics. Kytö actively participates in research ethics discussions and has organized numerous conferences on linguistic topics. She currently supervises doctoral students conducting research in English linguistics.
