Merrie Klazek is a versatile and respected trumpet artist known for her work in performance and education. Fluent in orchestral, chamber, solo, traditional, and popular music, she joined the full-time faculty at the University of Victoria’s School of Music in 2016. Klazek holds a Bachelor of Music from Calgary and a Master of Music from Northwestern University, where she studied under the late Vincent Cichowicz. Klazek has appeared as a presenter and adjudicator at various conferences and festivals, and in 2022, she commissioned “Listen to Learn,” a piece for nine trumpets based on themes of reconciliation and acknowledgment of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Before her tenure at UVic, she was the principal trumpet for the Thunder Bay Symphony from 1999 to 2018.
