Dr. Merrin Macrae

Biography

Merrin Macrae is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo. His research interests focus on the linkages between hydrology and biogeochemical cycling, particularly in natural and disturbed environments influenced by variable climatic regimes and land use change. Merrin’s work is largely centered on agricultural watersheds and wetland ecosystems, employing both field and laboratory research techniques. He investigates the effects of changing hydrologic conditions on biogeochemical processes involving key elements like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. His studies often focus on issues within Ontario and other regions of Canada, exploring how agricultural practices and climate variability affect nutrient supply and transport processes. Notably, he is examining phosphorus losses from tile drain effluents and the impacts of tillage practices, alongside assessing hydrological and biogeochemical processes in northern peatlands in the context of a warming climate.
