Biography

Mert Sabuncu is a professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University and Cornell Tech. His research spans biomedical data analysis with a particular focus on imaging data, emphasizing applications in neuroscience and neurology. He utilizes tools from signal/image processing, probabilistic modeling, statistical inference, computer vision, computational geometry, and graph theory to develop algorithms that enable the learning and exploitation of large-scale biomedical data. Mert received his PhD in Electrical Engineering, where his dissertation addressed image processing challenges related to establishing spatial correspondence across multiple clinical scans. Following his doctorate, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL), specializing in biomedical image analysis. Upon joining Cornell, he became a faculty member at the A.A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital, affiliated with Harvard Medical School. In 2021, he transitioned to Cornell Tech and Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. Mert is also the co-founder and executive editor of MELBA, a web-based journal dedicated to high-quality articles that bridge machine learning and biomedical imaging, and he co-launched the Machine Learning in Medicine initiative at Cornell, which fosters collaboration among researchers with complementary expertise.
