Biography

Messias Basques is a Junior Lecturer at the Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies at the University of Glasgow, with a focus on Black diaspora research. A trained anthropologist, he specializes in topics such as the cultural history of Afrodiasporic literature and the experiences of Black Indigenous communities, with a commitment to addressing issues of racism and antiracism within the context of anthropology and social sciences. He earned his BA in Social Sciences from the University of São Paulo and completed his Ph.D. in Anthropology at the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro. His past roles include being a Visiting Research Scholar at Harvard University and a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Williams College. Basques is actively involved in teaching and supervising students, particularly in projects related to the history and anthropology of Indigenous peoples. His research interests also extend to the work of pioneering Black authors and the implications of their contributions to the fields of anthropology and social sciences.
