Professor Metin Avkiran joined the British Heart Foundation (BHF) as Associate Medical Director of Research in 2016, with a secondment at King’s College London, where he also served as Deputy Head of the Cardiovascular Division since 2004. After holding various research and academic appointments, he was appointed as Professor of Molecular Cardiology in 2001. His research primarily explores the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate cardiac function in health and disease, with a particular focus on ischaemic heart disease and heart failure, evaluating the therapeutic potential of pharmacological manipulation of these mechanisms. He has received several prestigious awards for his contributions to cardiovascular science education and research.
