Dr. Mette Burmølle

Biography

Mette Burmølle is a Professor of Microbiology at the University of Copenhagen. With a Master's degree in Biology and a PhD, her research focuses on the interplay and interactions among bacterial species within diverse communities. She investigates how the activity of bacteria is heavily influenced by their microbial community, emphasizing the importance of understanding how these multispecies communities function. Burmølle's current work delves into the mechanisms behind interspecific interactions, examining factors such as synergism and antagonism, molecular interactions, quorum sensing, and horizontal gene transfer. Her studies analyze bacterial interactions using strain collections derived from human health-related environments, including soil and water sources as well as food processing facilities. She employs biofilm models as ideal systems for studying these interspecific bacterial interactions, utilizing advanced techniques to explore community dynamics.
