Dr. Mia Bay

Biography

Mia Bay is the Paul Mellon Professor of American History at the University of Cambridge. Her academic journey began with undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto, followed by postgraduate studies at Yale University under the supervision of the renowned historian David Brion Davis. Professor Bay's teaching career includes positions at the University of Pennsylvania, where she held the Roy F. and Jeanette P. Nichols Professorship of American History, and at Rutgers University, where she directed the Rutgers Center for Race and Ethnicity. Her research interests focus on the intellectual work of black women, the history of ideas surrounding race, and African American approaches to citizenship. She is dedicated to the study of race and transportation in American history. Currently, she teaches an M. Phil Option course on 'Race, Space, and Place in American History' and will begin teaching a course on 'Race, Rights, and Citizenship in the United States: 1865 to Present' in the fall. Progressively involved in the academic community, Bay serves as a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians and is a member of the Scholarly Advisory Board for the Gilder Lehrman Institute. Furthermore, she contributes to the Editorial Boards of the Journal of African American History and Modern Intellectual History.
