Biography

Professor Amelia (Mia) Crampin graduated with an MBChB from Manchester Medical School and completed internships in clinical pathology rotations in Manchester. She earned a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, which ignited her interest in Public Health and Epidemiology. She joined the Public Health Specialist Registrar rotation in South East London and undertook secondments at the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, now part of Public Health England. After completing her specialist training, she was appointed by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1998 and took on a field epidemiologist role at the Karonga Prevention Study, now the Malawi Epidemiology Intervention Research Unit (MEIRU), where she lived and worked for several years. She currently serves as the Director of MEIRU, overseeing urban and rural study platforms in Lilongwe and Karonga, including a demographic surveillance site in rural Karonga. In 2018, she joined the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow as part of an agreement with MEIRU. Professor Crampin has published widely in the fields of epidemiology, particularly regarding HIV and tuberculosis, and her current work focuses on chronic conditions in Malawi such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and depression. Her research includes epidemiological and mechanistic studies addressing the origins of chronic conditions and community-based interventions to reduce cardiovascular risk in future generations. She is also involved in significant data-sharing initiatives as the principal investigator of the African Non-communicable Disease Longitudinal Data Alliance (ANDLA).
