Miao Song completed a Bachelor's degree in Performance Arts Direction in China and worked as a director and journalist at CCTV (China Central Television Station). He received a Master's degree in Computer Science from Concordia University, focusing on interactive real-time soft body simulation. He completed his PhD in the SIP program, where he began researching interactive environments, combining his interests in documentary cinema, 3D computer graphics, and realistic physical simulation along with haptic responsive environments. Miao has received numerous scholarships, awards, and research grants. He currently teaches Design Computation Arts and Computer Science at Concordia University. His research involves a mix of interactive environments, cinematic documentaries, and 3D computer graphics with a focus on realistic physics-based simulation and haptic responsiveness. His short documentary film Remember received a short documentary award at the 1st BJIFF (Beijing International Film Festival) and was selected as one of the top ten videos screened at HTMlles 2010 in Montreal, Canada. In March 2012, the film was selected for public screening at the VWIFF (Vancouver Women Film Festival) 2012. Miao co-produced the feature film Snowflake, based on personal experiences, which was shortlisted among 20 film production projects in the 2nd BJIFF. His paper on the interactive documentary project Tangible Memories was published at ICEC (The International Conference Entertainment Computing) in 2011. The Illimitable Space System (ISS) is a development prototype originating from his doctoral thesis, which was expanded and field-tested in various events including Concordia Open House, Stewart Hall ExpoScience events in 2012 and 2013, and the Montreal Eureka! Festival.
