Biography

Michael Adorjan is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Calgary, where he focuses on youth cyber-risk, particularly in relation to parasocial relationships and societal responses to technology-facilitated violence. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from McMaster University in 2009, and also holds a Master of Arts in Criminology from the University of Toronto and an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Wilfrid Laurier University. His research interests encompass youth crime discourse, policy, policing, and the phenomenon of desistance in criminality. Adorjan has received multiple awards for his research and teaching excellence, including the Outstanding Researcher Award (Established Scholar) from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary in 2019, and has been recognized by the Society for the Study of Social Problems for his contributions to social theory. He has also collaborated with the University of Hong Kong’s Centre for Criminology as a Fellow. Adorjan's teaching extends across various sociological fields, including contemporary sociological theory and criminal justice.
