Biography

Michael Akladios is a historian specializing in migration and transnationalism, with a particular focus on the 20th century. His research critically reflects on the experiences of multipolar diasporas, particularly Coptic Orthodox Christians. His current and future scholarship examines the intersecting histories of modern Egypt, including the dynamics of Coptic Christian, Egyptian, and Arab immigrants in North America, as well as the internal relations of the Coptic Orthodox Church with other Christian entities. Akladios aims to contribute to the comparatively sparse literature on the Cold War relations between the United States, Canada, and Egypt, emphasizing issues of global Orthodoxy and Middle East politics, including the Arab-Israeli conflict. As a public-facing historian, he is the founder and executive director of Egypt Migrations, established in 2016, leading a team of experts dedicated to documenting and disseminating knowledge about the experiences of migrants from Egypt globally. The organization has garnered international recognition for its stewardship of the Egyptian immigrant archival collection housed at the Clara Thomas Archives and Special Collections at York University.
