Biography

Michael Patrick Albano is an Associate Professor as well as the Resident Stage Director of the opera programme at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music. He has staged forty operas including Canadian premieres such as Debussy’s L’Enfant Prodigue and Britten’s Paul Bunyan. His directorial credits feature productions like Il Barbiere di Siviglia at New York City Opera and Le Nozze di Figaro at Yale School of Music. He is also an accomplished librettist, having written original children’s opera librettos like Green Thing and Enchantment Dreams. Notably, his works have been commissioned by various companies, including the Canadian Children’s Opera Company. He has a keen interest in the development of original opera librettos and teaches a unique graduate course in operatic composition at the University of Toronto. Over the past two decades, he has also served as a resident dramaturge for Tapestry New Opera Works and is currently working on a full-length opera based on the legend of Lizzie Borden.
