Professor Allen is currently studying writings and the library circle of Lupus Ferrières. He is engaged in a selection of approximately 130 documents that survive from the original manuscript (Paris, BnF, lat. 2858) compiled from Lupus’s archives shortly after his death (after June 862). These letters are a key source for the history of books, libraries, and the movement of scholars and learning in the ninth century. He is finishing a fresh edition, commentary, and translation of Lupus’s letters and related documents, which involve the recovery of events, persons, and extant manuscripts. Additionally, he is embarking on a new project with Professor C. Veyrard-Cosme from Paris to re-edit the letters of Einhard, who died in 840. This work focuses on a seriously damaged mid-ninth century manuscript that preserves the bulk of Einhard's writings (Paris, BnF, lat. 11379). Professor Allen plans to use new imaging techniques to allow for a fuller recovery of Einhard’s words and meanings.
