Professor Dr. Michael Altaweel

Biography

Michael Altaweel, MD, is a Professor at the McPherson Eye Research Institute, University of Wisconsin-Madison, holding the Monroe E. Trout Chair in Eye Research. He specializes in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences and has over 20 years of experience as a principal investigator in National Eye Institute funded clinical trials. His research focuses on evaluating conditions such as uveitis, macular degeneration, retinal vascular disorders, and diabetic retinopathy. He is particularly interested in imaging biomarkers and has a recent focus on stem cell and gene therapy. Dr. Altaweel completed his Medical Doctor degree and Bachelor of Science in Biology/Engineering at Dalhousie University, where he also underwent his residency in Ophthalmology and a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Disease/Surgery at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics.
