Biography

Professor Balogh obtained his BSc in Physics and Mathematics from McMaster University in 1994 and completed his PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Victoria in 1999. He joined the University of Waterloo after a postdoctoral fellowship at Durham University in the UK from 2000 to 2004. In addition to his research and teaching activities, he is a leader in the Canadian astronomical community. He served as the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Gemini Observatory from 2012 to 2014 and is currently the Vice-Chair and Chair of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope from 2023 to 2025. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Thirty Meter Telescope starting in 2024. Moreover, he served on various committees including the Ground Based Astronomy Committee and the CASCA/ACURA TMT Advisory Committee where he was Chair from 2017 to 2024. His research interests include Exoplanets, Planet Formation, and Galaxy Formation and evolution, focusing on both theoretical and observational aspects.
