Biography

Michael Bankole initially joined the Department of Political Economy in January 2018. He completed his PhD in Political Economy at King’s College London, where his doctoral research examined substantive representation of ethnic minorities in Britain, particularly focusing on ethnic minority Members of Parliament during the 2017 General Election. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Sociology from the University of Surrey and an MSc in Democracy and Comparative Politics from University College London (UCL). While pursuing his PhD, Michael played a leading role in establishing the Raheem Sterling Scholarships, aiming to support Black British students from low-income backgrounds in accessing higher education. After completing his PhD, he took a Lectureship in Politics at Royal Holloway, University of London, where he taught for several years, convening and delivering undergraduate modules on politics, British politics, race, and quantitative research methods. Michael is passionate about making research accessible to the wider public and has contributed writings to various outlets, including The Independent, Tribune Magazine, and The Conversation, while providing political commentary for major news networks such as BBC, ITV News, Sky News, Channel 4 News, LBC, and Al Jazeera.
