Biography

Michael Barnes is a Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford, specifically at the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics. He earned his B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from the University of Arkansas in 2003 and completed his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Maryland in 2008. After obtaining his doctorate, he held the Oxford-Culham Fusion Research Fellowship at the University of Oxford as well as a U.S. Department of Energy Fusion Energy Sciences Fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2014, he joined the Physics Department at the University of Oxford. His primary research focuses on magnetised plasma turbulence and its applications in magnetic confinement fusion as well as in space and astrophysical systems.
