Dr. Michael Baumgaertner

Biography

Michael R. Baumgaertner, M.D., is a distinguished fracture surgeon and Professor Emeritus of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine. He has dedicated over 25 years to the treatment of severe fractures and associated complications. A native of Minnesota, Dr. Baumgaertner graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Art History and subsequently earned his MD from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and furthered his training with a fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Since joining the Yale faculty in 1988, his contributions to the field include a landmark publication on hip fracture fixation that has earned global recognition. He has authored numerous articles and textbook chapters and has lectured on surgical fracture care around the world. Dr. Baumgaertner has held leadership positions in various professional organizations, significantly enhancing the education and training of surgeons. He continues to be active in the global community through his roles with the AO Foundation and serves in various capacities dedicated to excellence in musculoskeletal trauma care.
