Biography

Michael Bockstaller is the Alcoa Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the Technical University of Karlsruhe in 1997 and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Johannes Gutenberg University in 2000. He has served as a scientific assistant at the Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2000-2004. In 2004, he was the group leader at RWTH Aachen University before joining Carnegie Mellon University in 2005. His research focuses on the structure-property-performance relations in polymer hybrid materials, particularly their optical and thermal transport properties, and the development of polymeric hybrid materials for applications in solid-state lighting and battery technologies. Michael's work has earned him several honors, including being a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a recipient of the Emmy Noether Grant from the German Science Foundation.
