Biography

Michael Bockstaller is the Alcoa Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his B.S. in Chemistry from the Technical University of Karlsruhe in 1997 and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Johannes Gutenberg University in 2000. He has held positions as a scientific assistant at the Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research, a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a group leader at RWTH Aachen University. His research interests focus on the structure-property-performance relationships of polymer hybrid materials, with specific emphasis on the optical and thermal transport properties of polymer nanocomposites and the development of polymeric hybrid materials for applications in solid-state lighting and battery technologies. Bockstaller has received several awards, including Fellow of the American Physical Society and Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He actively engages in research regarding self-healing polymers and data-driven material design, working alongside the CMU Center for Data-Driven Discovery in Multifunctional Material Systems.
