Dr. Michael Bostock

Biography

Michael Bostock is a Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC), specializing in Solid Earth Science. His research focuses on the dynamics and structure of subduction zones and the formation and evolution of continental landmasses. Bostock has employed advanced seismological tools extensively over the years to extract critical information from seismograms. His studies delve into the dynamic nature of subduction zones, exploring their role in tectonic plate interactions that lead to natural disasters. A significant aspect of his work is the study of Wadati-Benioff earthquakes and the creation of magma sources for volcanoes, particularly in the context of the Cascadia subduction zone. His research has led to groundbreaking insights into the hydrological cycle and the historical formation of continents, revealing the link between ancient diamond fields and the Earth’s oldest continental structures. Bostock's efforts culminated in the POLARIS project, which aims to advance geophysical research and understanding of seismicity across Canada. He has been a faculty member at UBC since 1993 after receiving his M.App.Sc. from Queen's University and Ph.D. from the Australian National University.
