Biography

Michael Brent is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto, specializing in age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and vascular occlusive diseases. He graduated with an MD from McMaster University in 1983 and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Toronto in 1987. He furthered his training with a fellowship in Medical Diseases of the Retina and Vitreous at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Brent has held significant positions in clinical research, including Director of the Clinical Trials Program at the Donald K. Johnson Eye Institute and Principal Investigator for the NIH funded Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network (DRCR.net). He has also led the Diabetes Action Canada Retinopathy Group, aimed at addressing the management of diabetes complications. Dr. Brent has been recognized with several awards and chairs, including the Milton Harris Chair in Adult Macular Degeneration. He has held teaching roles at both undergraduate and graduate levels and is an associate member of the Institute of Medical Science at the University of Toronto.
