Michael Brockman, DMA, moved to Seattle in 1987 to join the faculty of the University of Washington School of Music. He teaches concert jazz saxophone performance, jazz arranging, and composition. Brockman earned his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Washington, and a Master of Music degree with distinction from the New England Conservatory in Boston. He studied arranging with Jaki Byard, composition with George Russell, and woodwind performance with Joe Allard. His doctoral dissertation, titled 'Orchestration Techniques of Duke Ellington,' involved transcribing numerous classic large ensemble scores. As a lead saxophonist and co-director, Brockman has contributed to the award-winning Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra (SRJO) and has performed with prominent figures in the jazz world, including Wynton Marsalis and Quincy Jones. In addition to performing with SRJO, he has prepared scores for the band's repertoire, based on rare vintage recordings. An active professional performer, he tours both Europe and the eastern United States and has made significant recordings. He also invented a patented device called 'Broctave Key' that provides an additional octave/register vent for wind instruments. Brockman is also the Director of the UW Jazz Paris program.
