Michael Bruchas is a Professor at the University of Washington in the Department of Pharmacology. His research primarily focuses on neuromodulation, intracellular signaling, and the pharmacological mechanisms underlying neural circuits and behavior, particularly in the context of neuropsychiatric diseases. He employs multidisciplinary approaches to decipher the molecular and cellular underpinnings of affective behaviors such as reward, addiction, anxiety, depression, stress, and pain. His laboratory combines techniques including optogenetics, pharmacological interventions, physiological measurements, live imaging, and computational methods to study neuromodulatory circuits. In addition, he is engaged in bioengineering, developing optically-sensitive signaling tools, and wireless opto-electronics for modulating neuronal activity in live animals. Bruchas has received numerous awards for his contributions to neuroscience, including the Jacob P. Waletzsky Memorial Prize from the Society for Neuroscience and the Young Investigator Award from the International Narcotics Research Conference.
