Biography

Michael Butterworth is a Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he holds the Governor Ann W. Richards Chair in the Texas Program in Sports Media. He is the Director of the Center for Sports Communication & Media. Professor Butterworth's research focuses on the intersections of rhetoric, democracy, and sport, with particular interests in national identity, militarism, and public memory. He has authored several books, including 'Baseball Rhetorics of Purity: The National Pastime and American Identity in the War on Terror', 'Communication and Sport: Surveying the Field', and 'Sport and Militarism: Contemporary Global Perspectives'. His essays have been published in prominent journals such as Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies, Communication & Sport, and Rhetoric & Public Affairs. He earned his Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Public Culture from Indiana University-Bloomington, and has a Master's degree in Communication and a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Northern Illinois University. Outside of academia, he is an avid Chicago Cubs fan and enjoys discussions about sports, politics, and music.
