Biography

Professor Michael Celia specializes in ground-water hydrology, multi-phase flow in porous media, and numerical modeling of subsurface energy systems with a particular focus on geological sequestration of carbon dioxide and shale-gas systems. He is involved in various ongoing projects aimed at developing new simulation tools to model CO2 injection, migration, and possible leakage associated with carbon capture and geological sequestration (CCS). His research also encompasses multi-scale modeling of fluid flow and contaminant transport in porous fractured media as well as the analysis of large-scale infrastructure developments for commercial-scale CCS operations and measurements of methane leakage from historical oil and gas wells and hydrocarbon infrastructure. His work is part of a large industry-funded multidisciplinary effort at Princeton known as the Carbon Mitigation Initiative.
