Biography

Mike Chappell has been a member of the academic staff in the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick since 1990, where he is currently the MEng Course Manager. His teaching and research interests are primarily in the areas of engineering mathematics and mathematical modeling, specifically concerning simulation techniques. He has developed significant expertise in compartmental modeling and system dynamics, focusing on nonlinear systems and control theory. His research emphasizes structural identifiability analysis, which is essential for parameter estimation and design of experiments in system identification. Over recent years, he has utilized computer algebra and symbolic computation tools to analyze structural identifiability of nonlinear systems, alongside robust simulations of highly stiff systems. He has collaborated with various academic and industrial research groups, receiving funding from esteemed research councils such as the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, and the Medical Research Council. Currently, he serves as the Deputy Director of the Mathematics in Medicine Initiative (MiMI) at the University of Warwick and as a co-director of the Centre for Medical Science and Technology. Professor Chappell has received notable recognition, including the Snell Premium from the Institute of Electrical Engineers for his work on wavelet analysis related to heart rate variability and sleep apnea detection.
