Dr. Michael Church

Biography

Michael Church is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia. He completed his Doctor of Science at Durham University in 2008 and has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto. His research primarily focuses on morphodynamics of rivers, engaging in long-term studies of sediment transport and stability primarily in the Fraser River. He has conducted extensive experimental programs at the stream dynamics laboratory at Simon Fraser University, particularly in collaboration with Professor Jeremy Venditti. His research interests span fluvial sediment yield and landscape evolution over intermediate time scales, particularly those around 10,000 years, in addition to the history and methodology of geomorphology. He is a registered Professional Geoscientist in the Province of British Columbia and holds several prestigious fellowships including those from the Royal Society of Canada and the American Geophysical Union. His work has contributed widely to understanding geomorphological dynamics and sediment transport in fluvial systems.
