Michael Collins is a Professor and the Department Chair of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Since joining in January 2002, he has accumulated over 80 publications focused on energy-related research areas. Before coming to Waterloo, he spent 7 years at Queen's University, where he developed his expertise in passive solar control windows at the Solar Calorimetry Laboratory. As the Director of the Solar Thermal Research Laboratory (STRL) at Waterloo, he has shifted his research focus to solar-thermal analysis, the hybridization of photovoltaic and solar thermal systems, and heat pump-assisted solar thermal systems. His recent efforts have included upgrading STRL's material characterization facilities, making it a distinctive regional resource for materials characterization in solar thermal applications. His research interests encompass energy fenestration, spectroscopy, green buildings, energy efficiency, photovoltaics, and renewable energy storage.
