Biography

Mike Damzen is a Professor of Experimental Laser Physics at Imperial College London, where he has been a key figure in the Photonics Group since 2013 and leads the Nonlinear Optics group. His research focus encompasses various innovative laser technologies, applied optics, biomedical imaging, and industrial photonics applications. Over the years, he has developed numerous high-power laser architectures and techniques, notably including self-organizing holographic lasers and tunable diode-pumped solid-state laser systems. His work has significant implications for space-borne and airborne remote sensing, particularly supported by the European Space Agency, and he has pioneered a tunable-wavelength diode-pumped Alexandrite laser known for its world-highest power Q-switched operation. Additionally, Damzen is the Academic Founder of Midaz Lasers Ltd, where he served as Director and Chief Scientific Officer until its successful trade sale in 2006 to a leading global laser company. The company's products are notable for precision laser manufacturing and patented solid-state laser technologies derived from his academic research.
