Dr. Michael Dove

Biography

Michael Dove is the Margaret K. Musser Professor of Social Ecology at the Yale School of the Environment and Co-director of the Combined Doctoral Program in Anthropology. He has spent over four decades conducting research in Southeast Asia, focusing on environmental relations between local communities and their ecosystems. His work has involved long-term studies in Borneo and Java, where he has developed government capacity in Indonesia and advised the Pakistan Forest Service on social forestry policies. Dove’s research interests encompass the anthropology of climate change, cultural and political dimensions of natural hazards, indigenous environmental practices, and the history of environmental sciences. He actively engages in teaching, focusing on the intersections of local and global ecological systems. Dove encourages graduate students to pursue independent research projects while providing support and mentorship. He has authored several significant publications, including books on ecological challenges, natural history, and social science related to contemporary environmental issues. His teaching and research are underscored by a commitment to understanding the complex dynamics of conservation and development within diverse political contexts.
