Dr. Michael Doyle

Biography

Michael W. Doyle is a renowned scholar in global constitutionalism and international affairs, with a focus on democratic peace theory. He has authored a dozen books and specializes in international relations theory, international security, and international organizations, particularly pertaining to global migration regimes. As the director of Columbia University’s Global Policy Initiative, Doyle led the development of the Model International Mobility Convention, which aims to create a model treaty addressing aspects of international migration. Since 2003, he has taught at Columbia Law School, as well as in the International Public Affairs program and the Department of Political Science. His research, stimulated by observations of liberal democracies engaging in war, has been influential in policy debates. Some of his notable publications include 'Cold Peace: Avoiding New Cold War' (2023), 'Question of Intervention: John Stuart Mill and the Responsibility to Protect' (2015), and 'Liberal Peace: Selected Essays' (2011). His career has been recognized with numerous awards from the American Political Science Association and memberships in prestigious societies. Doyle has also held significant roles in international policy, including serving as assistant secretary-general and special adviser to Kofi Annan at the United Nations.
