Biography

Michael Dunbar is a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and serves as a Professor of Surgery at Dalhousie University, with cross appointments in Biomedical Engineering and Community Health Epidemiology. He completed his orthopaedic residency at Dalhousie University and further specialized in arthroplasty at the University of Western Ontario. Dunbar earned his PhD in Lund, Sweden, and is a member of the Swedish Knee Arthroplasty Registry, focusing on subjective outcomes in knee replacement surgery. He holds several leadership roles, including co-chair of the Canadian Joint Replacement Registry and Past-President of the Canadian Arthroplasty Society. In 2015, he received the inaugural QEII Endowed Chair in Arthroplasty Outcomes at Dalhousie University. His contributions to the field have earned him accolades such as the J. Edouard Samson Award for Outstanding Canadian Orthopaedic Researcher and recognition as one of the “Top 22 North American Knee Surgeons.” An active researcher, Dunbar has an h-index of 37, with over 300 peer-reviewed publications and has secured grants totaling $30 million. He has supervised numerous Master’s and PhD students and is dedicated to advancing surgical techniques in total joint replacement, especially through the integration of surgical robotics and mobile technology.
