Biography

Michael Everton is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Simon Fraser University, where he coordinates the Print Culture Program. His research focuses on nineteenth-century American literature and book history, particularly the history of publishing and copyright issues. He has held fellowships at the Huntington Library, the American Antiquarian Society, and the Bibliographical Society of America. Everton's work has appeared in prominent journals such as Early American Literature, Legacy, ESQ, Style, and New England Quarterly. He has edited collections and authored the book 'Grand Chorus Complaint: Authors and Business Ethics in American Publishing,' published by Oxford University Press in 2011. Additionally, he edited an edition of 'Herman Melville's Billy Budd, Sailor' for Broadview in 2016. He is currently finishing a book on how courtesy trade, an extralegal intellectual property norm, helped shape the American, British, and Canadian publishing landscapes in the absence of international copyright law. His forthcoming research explores religion and postsecularism in early U.S. literature. Everton teaches primarily on pre-1900 American literature and book history, engaging with various literary periods and traditions.
