Biography

Michael Ferns is a professor at the University of California, Davis, within the Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology. His research interests focus on understanding the cellular and molecular basis of synapse formation in the mammalian nervous system, particularly the role of cholinergic synapses in both peripheral and central nervous systems. His main research goals include defining the extracellular synaptogenic factors that regulate the formation and maintenance of neuromuscular and autonomic synapses, as well as elucidating the intracellular mechanisms governing the trafficking and localization of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors at synapses. He collaborates with clinician-scientists at UC Davis to explore how defects in synapse formation and receptor localization may contribute to various neurological diseases such as myasthenia gravis and congenital myasthenic syndromes.
