Michael Filler is a Professor and the T. Hamilton Bettye Traylor Faculty Fellow in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He serves as the Deputy Director of the Institute for Material Systems. His research focuses on the synthesis and understanding of nanoscale materials that enable new electronic, photonic, and energy technologies. A significant part of his work addresses the challenges to the widespread use of semiconductor nanowires. His lab specializes in the vapor-liquid-solid mechanism that allows individual nanowires to function as complete devices, such as transistors and solar cells. He employs in-situ infrared spectroscopy and electron microscopy to connect short-lived chemical bonds present during the growth of nanowires with their physical properties. Forthcoming work in the Filler Lab aims to scale up the production of nanowires to meet the demands of future technologies, requiring kilograms rather than milligrams. This ambitious research is carried out in collaboration with Professors Breedveld and Behrens.
