Dr. Michael Fleming

Biography

Michael (Mike) Fleming is an Assistant Professor at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. He holds a BA (hons) in Sociology from St. Thomas University, an MA in Sociology from the University of New Brunswick, and a PhD specializing in Work and Development from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Mike's dissertation research focused on the resilience of locally owned trucking companies in Atlantic Canada. He has extensive teaching experience across various subject areas, including sociology, criminology, political science, and social work. His teaching philosophy is guided by principles of public sociology and criminology with a strong emphasis on social justice and critical approaches to power in capitalist societies. His research interests are centered on critical criminology, toxic masculinity, policing, and corporate crime, with current research examining corporate crime in Canada, specifically the analysis of maple syrup marketing theft between Quebec and New Brunswick. Mike is recognized as a leading social scientist with a focus on the sociocultural dimensions of the trucking industry, and his work has been featured in regional and national journals. He has also been invited by Transport Canada to participate in discussions regarding resilience in the Canadian transportation sector. Outside academia, Mike is an active member of the Fredericton music scene, playing drums in local bands.
