Biography

Michael Follows is the Director of the MIT-WHOI Joint Program and the Nancy Allen Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. His research focuses on marine ecosystems and the relationships among microbial biodiversity, carbon, and nutrient cycling in oceans. Over the past decade, he has developed a keen interest in the biological and ecological aspects of global elemental cycles, creating a new platform that simulates and interprets the structure and function of biodiversity among marine microbial populations. His self-assembly approach leverages diverse virtual phenotypes to provide insights into theoretical ecology, filling gaps related to sparse observational data from marine ecosystems. His recent work emphasizes marine phytoplankton populations and aims to characterize marine microbes with a broader perspective on trophic strategies. Follows has been a faculty member at MIT since 2013 and has spearheaded important initiatives such as the MIT Darwin Project and the Simons Collaboration on Computational Biogeochemical Modeling of Marine Ecosystems.
