Professor Dr. Michael Garbutt

Biography

Michael Garbutt is a Senior Lecturer at the University of New South Wales in the School of Art & Design. He is an accomplished writer, artist, and documentary maker, with significant experience in design for aesthetic experiences. His academic background spans architecture and literature, with a strong focus on discourse analysis. Currently, his research centers on aesthetic experiences within museums, galleries, and natural urban environments. Garbutt has been actively involved in various research projects, including collaborative work with colleagues from the University of Central Asia to document and record residents' experiences of everyday aesthetics in the village of Dobolu, Kyrgyzstan. He also organizes the annual Nomad Arts Festival in Naryn, Kyrgyzstan, and runs regular sessions for the Playful Eye Project, emphasizing interactive and engaging methods of exploration in artistic contexts.
