Biography

Michael Garnett received his BA and MPhil in Philosophy from Cambridge University and completed his PhD at the University of Toronto. He had a brief stint as a College Lecturer at Wadham College, Oxford, and subsequently lectured at Birkbeck College, before joining King's College London in 2023. His research interests encompass a variety of issues related to freedom, autonomy, coercion, manipulation, indoctrination, ideology, and oppression. Recent publications explore the relationship between agency and psychological freedom, the nature of coercion, and differentiate between non-prevention and non-coercion in conceptions of negative liberty, as well as the historical positive conceptions of liberty. Currently, he is writing a book on the nature of psychological freedom. Michael has authored several significant papers in the field, contributing to academic discourse on autonomy and coercion.
