Biography

Michael received his PhD from Queen Mary, University of London in 2002 under the supervision of Peter Cameron. He has been employed at the University of Western Australia (UWA) since 2002 and has held positions such as an Australian Postdoctoral Fellowship, Australian Research Fellowship, and Australian Research Council fellowship. He was promoted to Professor in February 2018 and is a Fellow of the Australian Mathematical Society as well as a Fellow of the Institute of Combinatorics and Applications. Michael's research encompasses permutation groups, action on combinatorial structures, the theoretical properties of permutation groups, and the analysis of graphs with high degrees of symmetry. He is willing to supervise PhD projects, honours projects, and undergraduate research projects. Michael teaches a wide range of units, including calculus and linear algebra, and fourth-year specialist units in algebra and combinatorics. Additionally, he is currently the Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and a member of the University's Education Committee. He serves as an editor for the Journal of Group Theory and the Journal of Combinatorial Theory, and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of the Australian Mathematical Society. Michael is also involved in several outreach initiatives, including his role as a member of the Organising Committee for the Simon Marais Mathematics Competition and chair of the Western Australia Junior Mathematical Olympiad from 2016 to 2021.
