Biography

Michael Grubb is a leading international expert on energy systems, policy responses to climate change, and the economics of energy innovation systems transition. He has held significant roles in both academia and applied roles, including at the UK Climate Change Committee and as a former energy regulator at Ofgem. He chairs a UK government panel of technical experts on Electricity Market Reform. As director of the new UCL Centre for Net Zero Market Design, he focuses on critical research related to energy and climate change. His impressive research career includes being a Convening Lead Author for the IPCC Sixth Assessment, leading the Sustainability hub for the UK ESRC programme Rebuilding Macroeconomics, and serving as a Strategic Director for an international programme on Economics of Energy Innovation Systems Transition. Since joining University College London (UCL) in 2014, Grubb has transitioned to a full-time professor role within the Institute of Sustainable Resources. He previously served as Chief Economist at the Carbon Trust and held various academic and editorial positions, including founding and editing the Climate Policy journal. His notable publication, "Planetary Economics: Energy, Climate Change and Domains of Sustainable Development," published in 2014, integrates 25 years of research, earning the 2021 Marcel Boiteux Prize for outstanding contribution to energy economics literature.
