Biography

Michael Gruber is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Umeå University. He began his academic career in 1987 after studying philosophy and political science at the University of Gothenburg. He later transitioned to psychology, completing his bachelor's studies at Umeå University and being admitted to the doctoral program in psychology in 1995. His doctoral dissertation, which he defended in 2003, focused on phonological representations and dyslexia. Gruber has dedicated a significant portion of his work to pedagogical development within the department, taking on roles such as responsible for the Master's and Bachelor's Program in Cognitive Science from 2004 to 2011. He served as the director of studies at the Department of Psychology between 2008 and 2014 and held the position of deputy head of the department with educational responsibilities from 2011 to 2019. He is a group member of the Health Environment Research projects and participates in the European Society of Psychology Learning and Teaching (ESPLAT), where he has been elected President Elect of the executive committee, effective September 2025. Gruber's research interests include environmental sensitivity and hypersensitivity to electromagnetic fields (EMF). He has extensive teaching experience across various psychology programs and has led numerous courses over the years, with a focus on perception, cognition, developmental psychology, research methods, and statistics.
